LITTERBOX 101

There are two types of litter boxes - covered and uncovered. Your cat may prefer one to the other. Make sure the sides are short enough for your cat to get in. Make sure the box is big enough for your cat to do her business.

There are many different litters available - For example, clay, newspaper, organic material, scoopable, etc. Try to choose one that you and your cat can agree on. Cats have a stronger sense of smell and prefer one without a strong scent. When changing litter, be sure to mix old and new.

Keep the litter box scooped! This should be a daily chore. Clean and disinfect at least once a month.

Place the box in a quiet, private, comfortable spot. If there is high traffic or noise, your cat may not use it.

Place the kitty in the box. Let her explore from the box so she knows where it is. Kittens will have accidents in the beginning. Be patient.

If your cat has an accident, DO NOT RUB HER NOSE IN IT. This will actually tell your cat this is where to go. Cats do not understand after the fact. Positive reinforcement will always get better results. Praise her when you see her use the box.

If your cat has as accident:

1. Take her to the veterinarian to rule out a medical problem.

2. Ask yourself: Have you changed the type of litter, box, or location? Is it being scooped on a daily basis? Have you changed the location of the box? Do you need a second box? Some cats will urinate in one and defecate in another.

3. Clean the area with an enzymatic product that will absorb the odor. There are several on the market. Remember, our cat's have a high sense of smell and may be attracted to the same area.

Rule of thumb: Have one box per cat and one for the home.
